The Indian love classic, the Kama Sutra, was compiled in the fourth century AD by a Brahmin and religious scholar named Vatsyayana, working from texts dating from some eight hundred years earlier. Although world famous as a guide to the pleasures and techniques of sex, the author claims the subjects of his work are threefold; virtue, prosperity and love.

A large section of the work is devoted to making a success of marriage. Eight kinds of marriage are considered, the first four of which are “arranged” marriages. The second four take place either without the consent of the parents or without the sanction of the law. They are elopement, bride purchase, abduction and capture.

The first four forms of arranged marriage are considered morally superior to the second four. In ancient India they were divided into categories of royal marriages, priestly marriages, ancestral marriages and astral marriages. The tips and advice on how to make the arranged marriage work seem to be the same for all, however.
