Nettie Honeyball - listed as Nellie in the 1891 census, was born in Pimlico, London in 1874. Her father Frederick was a carpenter and upholsterer. The census for 1881 tells us that he originally came from Somerset, that he employed two men and that the family lived at 36 Tachbrook Street. His wife Mary was probably his second spouse as his family of seven fell into two age groups. Nettie, then aged 7, was probably the daughter of Mary. There is a suggestion that Nettie Honeyball may have somebody else, but there is no definitive identity and this Nellie seems the most likely
Women's Equality
Nettie grew up at a time when women's rights were becoming increasingly debated. 1893 saw the passing of the Married Women's Property Act that finally gave women legal rights over their own assets. Prior to that, a married women's possessions became her husband's. Ongoing debates about the right of women to have the vote were aired and it was in this context that women's football became part of the political agenda. At some point Nettie, then in her teens, became an advocate and her path crossed with that of Lady Florence Dixie, an active feminist and campaigner.
The British Ladies' Football Club
In 1894, twenty year old Nettie placed an advert in the Press, seeking other women who would be interested in playing football. She received about thirty positive replies plus twenty others who did not wish to be players but supported the concept. Taking on the role of secretary, the British Ladies' Football Club was launched. Lady Dixie was invited to be the President. Then living in Scotland, Florence Dixie took a particular interest in extending the game in that country.
Nettie called upon the skills of Tottenham Hotspur's centre half J W Julian to act as coach and the fledging team was able to practice on a field next to Alexandra Park Racecourse at Hornsey. It seems that at this time Nettie was lodging at "Ellesmere" 27 Weston Park, Crouch End. In the house was also Alfred Hewitt Smith who became the team's manager and spokesman.
There being no other teams to challenge, the British Ladies Football Club divided into two along geographical lines and North London wearing red, played South London dressed in pale blue. The question of what to wear was contentious. With some variations, the women settled for floppy blouse tops and loose knickerbockers. Shin pads were worn and men's boots. A soft hat with a tassel completed the strip.
The First Football Season
The matches played during 1895/6 were the first ever to come under Football Association rules. The women took to the field at Crouch End on March 23rd 1895. The North team beat the South 7-1.
